The Evolution Of A Washing Machine

One of the most common electric appliances we find in every household is a washing machine. The advancement in technology has made life convenient for us. The history of washing machine dates back to the earliest civilisations, as people tried to find the best way to clean their clothes by either using streams of running water or in house machines. This time-saving household appliance first appeared in the 1760s while its modern version first came out in 1908. The modern machine is pretty recent in design and has developed over the years into the fully automatic washing system that we use today. 

Scrub Board And Drum 

The scrub board is considered to be the first washing machine invention. Designed in 1797, it was considered to be very labour extensive and had to be sued with water for good results. It was made using metal and wood. This design was then modified in 1851 to include a drum and manually operated turner. The design of the hand-held spinner facilitated the stirring motion of the clothing and water. 

Rotary Washing Machine

In 1858, Hamilton Smith designed the rotary washing machine. William Blackstone produced this design and in 1874, created a machine that removed dirt and stains from the clothes as a birthday gift for his wife. This became the example of the first machine for use at home. 

Thor

Designed by Alva J. Fisher, Thor is the first electricity powered machine. The material used included a galvanised tub and an electric motor. The electric motor had to be modified due to a number of fatal electrocutions because of water spillage. 

Automatic Washing Machine

The first automatic machine was developed in 1937 by Bendix. The timers added in the design facilitated appropriate washing and extraction process. The spinning drum for water extraction was also a major improvement on the manual wringing method. 

Modern Washing Machines

The modern machines can be categorised into two different types; the top loader and the front loader. The top loaders have a vertical cylinder and the clothes are loaded from the top. The front loader has a horizontal cylinder resembling a drum. The combination of gravity and motion ensure water supply through the clothes during the cleaning process.
